While at Texas A&M University, he was a member of the Fight'n Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets and, upon graduation, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. After becoming a qualified Infantry Officer, he served for ten years in the 49th Armored Division of the Texas Army National Guard as a qualified Armor Officer.
