Jim grew up in Golden, Colorado and earned his B.A. degree with distinction in mathematics at the University of Colorado in 1969 as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa scholastic fraternity. In 1973 he received a Master of Divinity degree at the University of Denver Iliff School of Theology.
