- Q. How long does the bankruptcy process usually take for chapter 7?
- A: Once your paperwork is filed, it usually takes about three months for the case to be over, four if you pay your filing fee in installments. However, if someone sues you in the bankruptcy case or your trustee decides to sell some of your assets, it could take longer. Of course, your case can't be filed until you get your paperwork together and for some debtors, that takes longer than the case will be open. The longer you take to get your documents together, the longer it will take to get your discharge.
