Biography

Mr. Harmeling graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a bachelor of arts degree in English in 1993. While at UCLA, Mr. Harmeling was a sports writer and later a sports editor with the Daily Bruin. After working in sales for two years in Los Angeles, Mr. Harmeling commenced law school at the University of San Diego School of Law, receiving his juris doctor degree in 1998.

Following law school, Mr. Harmeling worked as a researcher/writer/editor before deciding to sit for the February 2000 California Bar Exam. While awaiting his bar examination results, he was hired by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office (SDCDA) as a contract attorney. Mr. Harmeling was admitted to practice in the State of California in June 2000, and worked for the SDCDA until October 2001. With the SDCDA, Mr. Harmeling's primary role was to mediate support disputes, and to advocate in court on behalf of San Diego County.

Mr. Harmeling entered private practice in October 2001 with Clements & Knock, LLP, a small civil litigation defense firm specializing in construction defect, personal injury (auto), and premises liability cases. Given the opportunity to manage a heavy caseload, Mr. Harmeling quickly gained significant experience taking and defending depositions, propounding and responding to written discovery, and preparing heavy motions, including summary judgment/adjudication and discovery motions. In addition, Mr. Harmeling advocated for clients in both mediation and arbitration settings, obtaining many favorable settlements and several successful arbitration awards.

In early 2003, Mr. Harmeling joined Levinson Bright Roberts, LLP, a boutique plaintiffs firm that focused its efforts in the areas of business litigation and toxic torts. Mr. Harmeling assisted the firm's partners, Daniel S. Levinson and Robert E. ("Bob") Bright, in trying three cases over the ensuing 10 months, including a 10-week toxic tort (carbon monoxide poisoning) jury trial, a two-week toxic tort bench trial (mold/water intrusion due to a homeowners association's negligence), and a two-day public works construction bench trial.

In late 2003, following a favorable verdict in the aforementioned mold/water intrusion trial, Mr. Harmeling was asked to join Shifflet Kane & Konoske, LLP, the firm that had defended the homeowners association in the action. With the Shifflet firm, Mr. Harmeling worked closely with the firm's two senior partners, Gregory C. Kane and Gregory P. Konoske, on a wide variety of complex litigation matters, including intellectual property (patent/copyright/trademark infringement), business, insurance bad faith, personal injury, civil rights, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), homeowners association (HOA), and landlord-tenant.

Mr. Harmeling formed the Law Offices of Henry Harmeling IV, APC in January 2006. Mr. Harmeling is presently involved in a wide array of litigation matters, including several employment-related lawsuits (including one racial discrimination case, a wrongful termination case, and a disparate treatment/wrongful denial of promotion case), a real estate boundary dispute, a real estate fraud / breach of fiduciary duty case, a couple of business litigation / breach of contract cases, as well as a number of personal injury matters. Additionally, Mr. Harmeling completed a 40-hour mediation training seminar through the North County Lifeline in June 2006, and has since mediated several matters in the area of divorce, landlord-tenant, personal injury and homeowners association disputes.

In June 2007, Mr. Harmeling became a member of the San Diego Superior Court's Mediation Panel. In August 2007, Mr. Harmeling was selected to be a mediator for the new attorney-client fee dispute mediation program through the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA).

In June 2010, Mr. Harmeling moved his offices from downtown San Diego to Encinitas, California (in North San Diego County).
