Elliot Brown, a Phillips ADR neutral, is the former managing partner of Irell & Manella LLP. He spent nearly 30 years in IP litigation, counseling, and licensing at a top IP practice.
Elliot graduated cum laude from Harvard College (1985), earning Phi Beta Kappa and a John Harvard Scholar award. He studied philosophy of science at Princeton, receiving an MA (1987) and a Mellon Fellowship, where game theory and Daniel Kahneman’s work on bargaining and cognitive bias shaped his approach to dispute resolution. He earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School (1990), serving as a Harvard Law Review editor.
Elliot clerked for Hon. Pierre N. Leval in S.D.N.Y., a copyright law expert. Joining Irell in 1990, he became a partner in 1996 and managing partner in 2009, overseeing strategy, finances, technology, and risk management. Irell earned Amlaw’s A-List for financial performance, pro bono work, and diversity during his tenure.
He has represented clients like Fortune 50 tech firms, movie studios, and startups in disputes involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and more, in federal and state courts, ITC proceedings, and arbitrations. His cases span software, semiconductors, video games, and medical devices.
Recognized by Best Lawyers in America for IP litigation, patent, and copyright law since 2006, Elliot was named Los Angeles Copyright Lawyer of the Year (2017) and a California Super Lawyer since 2004. He has taught at CLE events, co-taught at UCLA Law School, and consulted on films like Runaway Jury.
Elliot has served on the LA Legal Aid Foundation board for over a decade, volunteering for veterans, domestic violence victims, and the elderly poor.
